If you do try Katawa Shoujo, whether you like it or hate it, also try the unofficial and absurdly delightful flash … More I'm not about to recommend this blindly (and in fact I've refrained from recommending it to a lot of the friends I regularly push weird fun games onto), but if this sounds like it might be up your alley, give it a shot and see what you think. The writing's not stellar, and the drama gets more than a little dull at times, but all in all it holds up as a worthwhile entry in a genre prone to extremely wild swings in quality. It's not perfect, mind you, but they avoided cheap laughs, degrading pity, and the majority of the blatant stereotypes they could've relied upon, and instead put together a solid, occasionally touching little romantic visual novel. Somehow, it actually handles the subject matter with a good deal of care and sensitivity. Considering that the game's development largely took place on 4chan, it would be easy to expect Katawa Shoujo (which literally translates to Disability Girl or Cripple Girl) to be a giant heap of perverted awful.but somehow, it's not. Not exactly an original premise, but oh, there's a twist: the school is for students with serious medical conditions and disabilities, you are sent there after being hospitalized for a potentially fatal heart condition, and each of the prospective girls you can woo has their own unique disfiguring handicap.
